The tolling agency will take a picture of your license plate. Once we are notified of your trip we can then charge you on your NextPass account.
No. Once your NextPass account is active, the state toll agency uses your license plate to confirm your toll activity.
Toll charges will show up in the "Tolls" section within 2 or 3 business days from the date of the trip. However, in some occasions, toll road operators may have different timeframes for processing toll transactions. The toll charge could take up to 60 days from the trip date to appear on your NextPass account.
NextPass applies a 15% processing fee to the toll amount that includes the passthrough fees from our payment service providers and credit card merchants. Additionally, NextPass applies the processing fees charged by the state toll agencies.

No, you will never be charged twice. However, if you want to pay with NextPass instead of E-ZPass, you should follow these steps: 1) Install NextPass on your mobile device and complete all account set up steps; 2) Remove your vehicle's license plate from your E-ZPass account; 3) Remove any transponder or toll tag equipment from your vehicle. We recommend you follow the steps to return your transponder as indicated on the E-ZPass website. Note: The account that is charged (NextPass, E-ZPass, etc.) will be the one where the license plate was most recently registered.
If you are using a facility on the list of toll roads where NextPass is supported, just drive through!. Toll booths show a green light when a vehicle with a transponder approaches and the transponder signal is recognized. NextPass is not a transponder (or tag). With NextPass, your license plate will be recognized so you can keep driving even if the light is red. Please note that the app is not supported at the Dulles Greenway, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, and RMTA´s toll facilities that are not open road tolling such as the Boulevard Bridge.
